Wisconsin Amazon Sales Tax
Wisconsin has enforced its marketplace facilitator law since January 2020, so Amazon collects Wisconsin sales tax on every order. The base rate is 5%, with county and local taxes pushing combined rates up to 7.9% in Milwaukee.
Overview
Wisconsin's marketplace facilitator law took effect January 1, 2020. The state base rate is 5%, and most counties add a 0.5% county tax; the City of Milwaukee carries the highest combined rate in the state at 7.9% (5% state + 0.9% Milwaukee County + 2.0% City of Milwaukee). Amazon collects and remits Wisconsin sales tax on every order shipped to a Wisconsin address.
The great majority of Wisconsin counties levy the 0.5% county tax, so most addresses see a 5.5% combined rate, with Milwaukee and a few special-district areas higher. Wisconsin's economic nexus standard was originally $100,000 in sales OR 200 transactions; the 200-transaction count was eliminated effective February 20, 2021, leaving the $100,000 gross-sales threshold as the sole trigger.
For FBA sellers, Amazon automatically handles Wisconsin collection and remittance on marketplace orders, so an Amazon-only seller generally has no separate Wisconsin registration obligation. Sellers with their own website or other non-marketplace sales should track those separately. Consult a tax professional for edge cases such as product-specific taxability.
What FBA sellers still need to know
No registration is required for ongoing Amazon-only sales. Direct or non-Amazon sellers exceeding $100,000 in annual sales into Wisconsin must register and remit (Wisconsin removed its 200-transaction threshold effective February 20, 2021).
