Utah Amazon Sales Tax
Utah has enforced its marketplace facilitator law since October 2019, so Amazon collects Utah sales tax on every order. The state base rate is 4.85%, with combined rates reaching roughly 9% in some areas.
Overview
Utah's marketplace facilitator law took effect October 1, 2019. The state base rate is 4.85%, and local option, county, and special-district taxes can raise the combined rate to roughly 9% (for example, about 8.45% in Salt Lake City, with some resort and special-district areas higher). Amazon collects and remits Utah sales tax on every order shipped to a Utah address.
Utah's tax structure layers several local components on top of the 4.85% base, so the exact combined rate varies meaningfully by destination address. For remote and marketplace sellers, Utah's economic nexus standard was originally $100,000 in sales OR 200 separate transactions; Utah eliminated the 200-transaction count effective July 1, 2025, leaving the $100,000 gross-sales threshold as the sole trigger.
For FBA sellers, Amazon automatically handles Utah collection and remittance on marketplace orders, so an Amazon-only seller generally has no separate Utah registration obligation. Sellers with their own website or other non-marketplace channels should track those sales separately. Consult a tax professional for edge cases and product-specific taxability.
What FBA sellers still need to know
No registration is required for ongoing Amazon-only sales. Direct or non-Amazon sellers exceeding $100,000 in gross sales into Utah in the current or prior calendar year must register and remit (Utah removed its 200-transaction threshold effective July 1, 2025).
