Rhode Island Amazon Sales Tax
Rhode Island enforces marketplace facilitator law since July 2019. Amazon collects all Rhode Island sales tax at a flat 7% with no local add-ons.
Overview
Rhode Island's marketplace facilitator law took effect July 1, 2019. Rhode Island levies a flat 7% statewide sales tax with no local or municipal sales taxes at all, so the rate is exactly 7% on every taxable order regardless of where in the state it ships. Amazon collects and remits this 7% on every order shipped to a Rhode Island address.
The absence of any local sales tax makes Rhode Island one of the simplest states for rate calculation — there is a single combined rate everywhere. Rhode Island does not host a major Amazon fulfillment center, though the marketplace facilitator law still requires Amazon to collect on all facilitated sales delivered into the state.
For an Amazon-only (FBA) seller, Rhode Island sales tax is collected and remitted automatically by Amazon, with no separate registration required for marketplace-facilitated sales. Sellers with other channels or in-state nexus should consult a tax professional. This is educational information, not legal advice.
What FBA sellers still need to know
No registration for ongoing Amazon-only sales — Amazon collects and remits. Direct or non-Amazon sellers exceeding $100,000 in gross sales or 200 separate transactions into Rhode Island in the prior calendar year must register and remit.
