North Carolina Amazon Sales Tax
North Carolina enforces marketplace facilitator law since February 2020. Amazon collects all North Carolina sales tax. The state hosts major Amazon fulfillment centers.
Overview
North Carolina's marketplace facilitator law took effect February 1, 2020. The state base sales tax rate is 4.75%, and counties add local sales and transit taxes of roughly 2% to 2.75%, bringing the combined rate to about 7% to 7.5% in most jurisdictions. Amazon collects and remits North Carolina sales tax on every order shipped to a North Carolina address.
North Carolina is a significant Amazon fulfillment hub, with facilities in the Raleigh-Durham area, Charlotte region, and elsewhere, plus expanding robotics operations. Sellers storing inventory in these centers historically created a physical-nexus footprint, but the marketplace facilitator law shifts collection responsibility for those marketplace sales onto Amazon.
For an Amazon-only (FBA) seller, North Carolina sales tax is handled automatically by Amazon, with no separate registration required for marketplace-facilitated sales. Sellers with other channels or in-state nexus should consult a tax professional. This is educational information, not legal advice.
What FBA sellers still need to know
No registration for ongoing Amazon-only sales — Amazon collects and remits. Direct or non-Amazon sellers exceeding $100,000 in gross sales into North Carolina in the current or prior year must register and remit (the 200-transaction threshold was repealed effective July 1, 2024).
