Minnesota Amazon Sales Tax
Minnesota enforces marketplace facilitator law since October 2018. Amazon collects Minnesota state and local sales tax on every order.
Overview
Minnesota's marketplace facilitator law took effect October 1, 2018. The state base rate is 6.875%, and local jurisdictions plus transit and special district taxes can push the combined rate to roughly 8.875% in higher-tax areas. Amazon collects and remits the correct combined rate automatically on orders shipped to Minnesota addresses.
The exact rate a buyer pays depends on the delivery location, since cities, counties, and transit districts can add local taxes on top of the 6.875% state base. Minnesota is not a primary Amazon fulfillment-center state for nexus purposes, so the marketplace facilitator statute is typically what triggers Amazon's collection obligation for third-party sellers.
For FBA sellers, Amazon's destination-based collection means Amazon-only sellers have no separate Minnesota registration obligation for those marketplace sales. Sellers with direct or other channels should track their own economic nexus, and edge cases are worth reviewing with a tax professional.
What FBA sellers still need to know
No registration for ongoing Amazon-only sales. Direct/non-Amazon sellers exceeding $100,000 in retail sales or 200 or more retail transactions into Minnesota over 12 months must register and remit.
