Massachusetts Amazon Sales Tax
Massachusetts enforces marketplace facilitator law since October 2019. Amazon collects the flat 6.25% state sales tax, and there are no local sales taxes.
Overview
Massachusetts' marketplace facilitator law took effect October 1, 2019. The Commonwealth imposes a flat 6.25% sales tax statewide with no local or district add-ons, so every taxable order carries the same 6.25% rate regardless of the delivery city. Amazon collects and remits this tax automatically on orders shipped to Massachusetts addresses.
With no local sales tax layered on top, there is no combined-rate range — the rate is a uniform 6.25% everywhere in the state. Massachusetts is not a primary Amazon fulfillment-center state, so the marketplace facilitator statute, rather than in-state inventory, is typically what triggers Amazon's collection obligation for third-party sellers.
For FBA sellers, Amazon's automatic collection means Amazon-only sellers generally have no separate Massachusetts registration obligation for those marketplace sales. Sellers with direct or other channels should monitor their own economic nexus, and any unusual situations warrant a conversation with a tax professional.
What FBA sellers still need to know
No registration for ongoing Amazon-only sales. Direct/non-Amazon sellers with more than $100,000 in Massachusetts sales in the current or prior calendar year must register and remit.
